photography // faves: Jill DeVries

Happy Thursday, friends!  You're in for a photographic treat today with Jill DeVries Photography.  I asked Jill for permission to share her images with you guys, and I'm happy to say she agreed.

Disclaimer: there are a LOT of images in this post.  I do not apologize as they are ALL amazing, but I just figured you should know what you're getting yourself into.

I find myself a little speechless in an attempt to describe Jill's photography.  The unique perspective she brings to her images are just breathtaking, stunning, inspiring... (oh, look, I found some words!).  :)  Seriously, she's on my short list of photographers I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to #1 follow around all day, every day in hopes that some of her genius would rub off, and #2 photograph my wedding.  Hands down.  I don't care that she's in Michigan.  I'll fly her out to California in a heartbeat.

Jill's point of view is just so very lovely and unexpected.  She breathes magical new life into the images of every wedding she photographs.  She takes the same scene you've seen at thousands of weddings and makes it look fresh, new, distinctive, beautiful.

Here are some of my favorites from Jill.  Don't these images just make you swoon?

The otherwise expected shot bride & groom exchanging vows takes on new life when captured from behind foreground foliage.  LOVE!

I adore this shot of the bride and groom (off to the left) surrounding the dance floor with their guests.  Brilliant angle.

I have a new obsession with portraits that focus on something other than faces.  The motion in this one makes it especially lovely.

Capturing the special details of the wedding venue is key; sweet, quirky intricacies like vintage lace get me every time.

Pictures of people taking pictures?  Just plain cool.

Pictures of the BRIDE taking pictures?  Extra cool.

LOVE photographs of legs & feet, especially with a broad foreground.

This particular wedding ceremony was delayed by a torrential downpour.  I love that Jill captured this moment of the bride checking out the weather forecast in dismay (and it was all good, because they just waited it out and the sun broke through for a lovely wedding after all).

From the same wedding: a cute detail like this gentleman's teddy bear umbrella.  Just perfect and an appropriate reminder of moments that made the day special.

A technique of Jill's I really adore: lots of overhead space in her shots.  (Jill, if you can tell me what this is called, if anything, I'd love to know!)  This approach captures the setting of a shot in a very dramatic, artistic way that I just love.

A must-have moment for every wedding photographer: emotional parents.  The angle of this shot is non-intrusive, and I love that!

More feet, and I like that Jill let other people into this photo -- an artistic approach to capturing scenery instead of trying to fake an empty street.

Details you don't always consider (but appreciate when your photographer : band equipment.

More feet.  I can't get enough.  Jill just does it so well!

Candid moments are my favorite.

Jill also has an amazing knack for capturing moments involving windows, with just the right amount of reflection and glare.  Stunning.

Fun, candid party moments are always a blast and make awesome memories for the bride and groom.

Jill makes flowers on concrete look REALLY good.

Last but not least: genuine smiles.  My ULTIMATE favorite.

Dear Jill,

Thank you for letting me share your images with my readers.  You are a fantastic, immensely-talented, unspeakably-inspiring photographer and I could spend all day, every day looking at your shots.  I appreciate you and the work you do.

Love,
Emily
