This is a feature very near and dear to my heart: shelter dogs.
I. Am. A. Dog. Person. I love animals and I have a particularly soft spot for any dog, but especially pups who have been slighted in any way. I donate to the ASPCA and Humane Society whenever I can afford it; sales of this print in my Etsy shop have helped me do that a bit more often (I donate 100% of the sale of the print to the ASPCA).
A few months ago I stumbled upon Susan Sabo Photography on Etsy and I'm completely smitten with (a) her talent, (b) her subject matter, and (c) her mission (she's bringing awareness with her "Shelter Dogs" series and donates 10% of all her sales to animal help organizations). She also makes her prints available for fundraising efforts and she herself volunteers her time at local animal shelters.
Some of Susan's images are uplifting, and some are heartbreaking. All of them are breathtaking. Susan's eye for composition is something I absolutely strive for as a photographer.
Enough babble from me. Here is some of Susan's work. No captions here; I'm going to let the images speak for themselves. Click on them to be taken to Susan's Etsy shop. And BUY something--it's for a good cause!
I did my best to start and end this little photo gallery on happy notes, but some of these images just make me so sad. I admire Susan for be able to volunteer at shelters; I once went into the Orange County Animal Shelter to ask about volunteering and couldn't even get to the front desk; I walked the aisles of dogs, just crying uncontrollably. I have since volunteered my time doing administrative work for such organizations. :)
I hope you'll check out Susan's shop on Etsy as well as her other locations on the Web:

And give your pets big kisses tonight; they don't even KNOW how lucky they are! At least that's what I tell my dogs. ;)

ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you came into my life last week. I adore how you started this post; it's like, are you me?? You're a wonderfully gifted photographer with a lot of success in your future, I am humbled and honored to read such glowing praise of me and my work. Thank you so much. And thank you *especially* for being one of "us," those who give a shit about these poor castoffs and work to give them all a warm bed and a day full of kisses and things that smell of pee :)
I'd love to shoot with you sometime, if for no other reason than to just meet. Let's make that happen.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU, Susan! It means so much to me that you stopped by and like the post! Yes PLEASE let's shoot together sometime! We're so close -- I'm just down the road in East Los Angeles, right by the 710 and everything. :)
DeleteOh.My.Goodness -these photographs are painfully beautiful. I went over and "favorited" her shop, and I will certainly be keeping an eye on her work! It's such a worthy cause: I am a big believer that all of God's creatures deserve our lovingkindness.
ReplyDeleteYes, I totally understand, if I went to the shelter, I would want to bring everyone home. We have always adopted our babies from the shelter so I try to do my part. But my heart just breaks seeing them. Just hopping over from the May Day Blog Hop and am now following you. I would love to invite you to link up any of your posts to my first time ever blog hop:) Hope to see you there.
ReplyDeleteThose pictures really touched my heart. I can agree with you and say shelter dogs are a subject dear to my heart. I used to volunteer at an animal shelter and go to events with them to find people willing to adopt our dogs. They're much too sweet to be left abandoned. Thanks so much for making this post!
